It's one thing for someone who sits at a computer all day and never exercises to have back pain, but for a bodybuilder, someone who spends hours and hours each week pouring everything they've got into building muscle, it should be criminal!

The reason we say this is because, if you are going to spend so much time, money, and energy trying to build the "perfect body", you have to make sure that you not only look good, but also feel good.

We've identified what we call "Bodybuilding Sins"
 that lead to back pain, sciatic pain, and other injuries. Read 'em and take action now if you are serious about bodybuilding and are fed up with your back pain.

Here's arguably the biggest component of how back pain affects bodybuilders...

Choosing the WRONG Exercises

Get ready, this is gonna hurt! The exercises most bodybuilders focus on the most, are the ones that cause the most problems!
Hopefully, you're different...

But before we share with you what those exercises are, let's talk real quickly about WHAT bodybuilding (really) is...

The goal of bodybuilding isn't to get as big as you can, or at least to us it isn't and shouldn't be, but to build a balanced body that is as strong as possible in every way. For example, while being freakishly big may get people's attention, it serves you no purpose at all...

While on the other hand, what if you were not only big, but also extremely strong and powerful, lightning fast, flexible, and agile enough to kick ass if needed?

So many bodybuilders build massive amounts of muscle yet are so unbelievably weak and inflexible - for example, we know a guy who can bench press over 350 lbs but can't do a measly 50 push-ups!

The point is, the exercises you choose and how you perform them not only determine how big, strong, and flexible you are, but also affect how your body functions and whether or not you suffer from aches, pains, and injuries like back pain and sciatic pain.

OK, here they are - the exercises that create the most problems and are most likely to lead to back pain:

1. Bench Press

2. Leg Extension

So, any of your favorites on this list?

While there are others, these are the two that cause the most damage.

There are several reasons why these exercises made our list of the "worst bodybuilding exercises". 

First, both of them target areas that already tend to get worked a lot in everyday life and often times are overdeveloped; and by focusing so much on these exercises you end up creating muscle imbalances, or worsening existing muscle imbalances, which pull your bones and joints out of their normal position.

And this leads to uneven pressure and wear and tear on your muscles, ligaments, tendons, bones, and joints and will sooner or later lead to breakdown or injury.

For example, chronic overuse of the bench press, coupled with little or no exercises targeting the upper back, leads to an over-development of the chest and a lack of strength and development in the upper back.

This all too common combination leads to what we call "Turtle Back". You know what we're talking about: when the shoulders are pulled so far forward, lats are as wide as a barn, and from behind, their back looks like a giant sea turtle shell!

This "Turtle Back" posture can create neck, upper back, and shoulder pain and injuries faster than you can pop an Advil!

Plus, how many times during your day are you forced to lie on your back and push up a bar loaded with weights? There are so many better exercises for chest development that not only stimulate more muscle, but also build more usable strength.

Now let's talk about the fabulous thigh builder, the leg extension.

Not only does it place an unbelievable amount of strain on the knee joint, but it also will quickly overdevelop the quads, which are already getting far more work than their counterpart, the hamstrings.

An imbalance between the quadriceps and hamstrings, which is also extremely common in bodybuilders, is a key contributor to back pain. This imbalance is easily identifiable by what people often call "Bubble Butt" or "Ghetto Booty".

So hopefully you can see how important it is to choose your exercises wisely. We strongly recommend you cut out these exercises, or at least cut back on using them and add in targeted exercises for the opposing muscle groups and targeted stretches for those tight, overdeveloped muscles.

The key to eliminating back pain, or any other ache, pain or injury for that matter, is to bring your body closer to balance?

What good is muscle if you can't use it? How many more workouts are you going to miss because of back, neck, or shoulder pain?

NSAIDs: This Widely Prescribed Medication Won't Cure Your Back Pain Problem

Why are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) the most prescribed medication for back pain? Simple. They help you make it through the day by taking the edge off. They make you feel better, or at least they help you forget about the pain. Despite their popularity, NSAIDs can keep you in a vicious cycle of pain.

It is true that NSAIDs help with pain and inflammation. It is also true that you will feel better if you take them. But the question to ask is this: Are you getting better? In an acute muscle strain situation, the answer is maybe. For sub-acute or chronic back pain, neck pain, or sciatica conditions, the answer is most likely no.

You see, regardless of the type of back pain condition you are suffering from, it is a physical problem, meaning it has to do with the strength and flexibility of your muscles, the position of your bones, and how precisely your joints work.

Let me be more specific: If the muscles in the front of your legs are much stronger than the muscles in the back of your legs, your pelvis will be pulled out of its normal position, eventually causing your spine to go into abnormal curvature. This is an underlying factor in just about all back pain conditions that are symptomatic. It's probably how your problem got started. This process may take many years to happen, but once it begins, it will progress until it becomes a chronic condition.

No NSAID can make a muscle stronger or more flexible. More importantly, NSAIDs cannot create balance between the muscle groups or cause a joint to function properly. So, if you simply opt for relief from pain, your body will just continue the debilitating process of getting older much faster.

Now that you know that NSAIDs will not address your underlying problem, you should also know about the WARNING the drug companies have to give you about these products. It is important information. The Food and Drug Administration has asked the manufactures to update the warning on the package to let customers know that serious cardiac conditions and intestinal problems can occur - and that these can lead to death. Nice!

If you are taking NSAIDs - and especially if you have been taking them for an extended period of time - you should be aware that these medications put a heavy strain on your kidneys and liver. You and you doctor should discuss appropriate precautions, such as having your liver enzymes tested to make sure that your liver is not being overtaxed.

Chronic pain is persistent, long-lasting discomfort that doesn't resolve itself or respond to routine pain-relief methods. Clearly, despite their arsenal of elaborate and costly hi-tech medical procedures, doctors cannot diagnose how to stop this growing national health emergency.

Today more than 150 million Americans suffer chronic pain. This amounts to a whopping 100% increase in just a dozen years! How is it possible, with our modern scientific mainstream medicine, that people are suffering more, not less?

When it comes to pain relief, most people turn first to their medicine cabinet and have more than one pain reliever on hand to choose from. Yes, these work as well as NSAIDs while being less harsh on the stomach, but numerous reports of heart attacks and stroke have prompted the FDA to re-evaluate the risks and benefits of the COX-2s. COX-2 drugs such as Vioxx and Celebrex were actually taken off the market because of these risks.


Narcotics Painkillers

This class of prescription drugs is powerful, but abuse and addition are serious side effects. An estimated 20 percent of people in the United States have used prescription drugs for non-medical reasons. The problem is serious and it is growing. The availability of drugs is probably one reason. Doctors are prescribing more drugs for more health problems than ever before. Are the foods you are eating keeping you in pain?

An Anti-Inflammatory Diet Could Be the Ticket to Feeling Better

When I say the word "inflammation," it's likely to evoke thoughts of painful joints and muscles, swelling, and a loss of mobility. But did you know that recent research shows that chronic inflammation in your body can lead to serious diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, some cancers, and Alzheimer's disease, to name just a few?

The amount of inflammation in your body varies and is dependent on a number of factors - including your activity level, the amount of sleep you get, the degree of stress in your life, and even the foods you eat. What you have to realize is that these factors are cumulative - meaning they build up over time. And the more that any or all of these factors get out of whack, the risk for disease increases.

Early in life, these levels can be so low that you might not even be aware that you have any inflammation in your body. That's because our bodies do a fairly decent job of controlling the inflammation - at least for a while. Then one day you wake up and you're in your 40s and something is just not right. That's when the fear begins to set in, and you think to yourself: What did I do wrong? or What can I do now to help myself?

The first step is to get your C-reactive protein (CRP) levels tested. C-reactive protein is produced by the liver, and the level of CRP rises when there is systemic inflammation in the body. Ask your doctor about this (you may have to demand to have the test done). All it requires is a blood sample that will be evaluated by your doctor. And because diet can play a large role in how much or how little inflammation you have, you may want these levels looked at by a registered dietician who can help you formulate an appropriate eating plan.

If you have pain due to inflammation, you may choose to take the traditional medical path, which includes non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), steroids, and even joint-replacement surgery in extreme cases. What You Eat Makes All The Difference

The food we eat is a critical piece of the puzzle when it comes to controlling inflammation. But at the very least, you must try to decrease your intake of sugars and hydrogenated oils and increase your daily intake of fiber. Ideally, you should be consuming 35 grams of fiber (that is a ton of fiber, but it's worth shooting for).

* Get better sleep - 7 to 9 hours of sleep is a must for optimal health; getting a good night's sleep is key to controlling systemic inflammation.

* Relax more often to lower stress levels - Find time for yourself throughout the day to focus on your breathing and clear the clutter from your mind; learn to stay focused on the most important tasks in your life.
